9 Dragons Hostel has a great hutong location and is an excellent choice for those seeking budget private rooms.
| Located just 100m from Zhangzizhong Lu subway station. Private rooms (from ¥198) are well-equipped and great value. The dorm rooms (from ¥60), however, are quite cramped. Some rooms have internet connections and there is wireless access in the restaurant. The restaurant at 9 Dragons House boasts bacon & egg breakfasts from ¥18, there’s a common room and a lovely small balcony affords a charming view over the hutongs. The common room is a bit too small and dark to make it a fun place to interact with fellow travelers. | ||||

| Leo Hostel | ||||

Leo Hostel is one of the most popular backpackers in Beijing, mainly due to a fun, friendly atmosphere.
| The bar and common area is the centerpiece of the hostel and turns into a very lively place at night. The facilities in the common area, including wireless internet and pool table, are great. Leo Hostel also benefits from welcoming staff and a great location on a lively street about 10 minutes walk from Tiananmen Square. Beds in the spacious dorm rooms start at ¥50. In fact, the dorm rooms are some of the best in Beijing. The private rooms aren’t quite as nice as at some other hostels and cost ¥200 ($29). | ||||

| Beijing City Central Youth Hostel | ||||

The Beijing City Central Youth Hostel is the best option for those who want to stay near the main train station.
| A sprawling complex, it’s much more like a hotel than a hostel. The private rooms (¥268) are excellent and the deluxe rooms (¥368) especially are a great option even for mid-range travelers. Private rooms with shared bathrooms are ¥134 and dorm beds are ¥60. The communal showers and bathrooms are clean if not very private. Beijing City Central Youth Hostel has a massive and lively bar and restaurant, and young, friendly staff. The hostel also boasts a breakfast buffet for ¥20, plentiful public computers, a mini-market and a communal kitchen. | ||||

| Peking Youth Hostel | ||||

A good choice for those looking for dorm accommodation in Beijing, the Peking Youth Hostel is big on atmosphere.
| Built in a traditional Si-He courtyard design, the hostel is both charming and full of character. The downside of this design is a reduction in privacy, with most rooms looking onto the communal courtyard area. Dorm beds start at ¥80 and are worth the money. Private rooms (from ¥350), however, are not worth the money. In addition to the courtyard, there’s also a nicely-decorated indoor communal area/bar/restaurant. Peking Youth Hostel has a cool location in an alley right near the east wall of the Forbidden City. | ||||

| Downtown Backpackers Youth Hostel | ||||

Downtown Backpackers Youth Hostel is rough around the edges but located on a very cool street: a traditional hutong packed with bars and cafes.
| The location is a tad inconvenient though, with the nearest subway station (Andingmen) a good 15 minute walk away. Rooms are clean but simple with no extra features. Dorm beds start at ¥70. All dorms have their own bathroom and if you get a 6-bed room (or fewer) they are surprisingly spacious. Meanwhile, private rooms start at ¥200. There is a common room, but on such a lively street there aren’t a lot of travelers hanging out in the hostel. Not the best quality hostel around but a good choice if you want a dorm bed. | ||||

| Jade Youth Hostel | ||||

Much more like a hotel than a hostel, Jade International Youth Hostel features 102 rooms spread over multiple stories.
| Dorm beds start at ¥60. Bathroom facilities should be sufficient with 10 showers for each floor. The private rooms are nice and clean and come with a television and phone and are priced from ¥260. On the premises is a restaurant serving Chinese meals throughout the day. There is also an internet bar and a very large common room, perhaps too large to make it useful for meeting other travelers. The location is good – just east of the Forbidden City and walking distance to Tiananmen Square and Wangfujing Dajie. Service seems a bit indifferent. | ||||
