Pubs in Beijing

Paddy O’Shea’s
When Paddy O’Shea’s opened at the end of 2007 it was Beijing’s first real Irish pub, and it pretty much still is.
Paddy O’Shea’s has all the trimmings you would hope for including draught Guinness, Kilkenny (¥55) and Carlsberg (¥35). There’s also some decent pub grub including full Irish breakfasts for ¥68. There are a number of screens around for sports broadcasts (usually football). Upstairs is a sort of old-school disco area which doesn’t feel quite right. Negatives include a rigid sort of atmosphere and a somewhat insular crowd: prepare to be stared at by the regulars when you enter. The upstairs retro disco is a bizarre inclusion.

Durty Nellie’s
Durty Nellies Pub, Beijing Durty Nellie’s is an Irish-themed pub with a decent food menu and occasional live music acts.
Guinness, Kilkenny and Boddingtons are on tap at ¥50 a pint, Tsing Tao draught is the budget option for ¥25, while Tiger, Carlsberg and Hoegaarden round out the draught beer field. Spirits range from ¥25-40, while wine starts at ¥190 per bottle. Irish beef stew (¥45), shepherd’s pie (¥38) and fish and chips (¥38) are the authentic Irish offerings while there are plenty more generic meals for around ¥55-80. The interior of Durty Nellie’s is suitably cluttered with posters, painting and assorted knickknacks for the genuine pub feel. Durty Nellie’s isn’t a great pub, but it’s one of only a few in Beijing.

Meanwhile there are over 70 bottled Belgian beers on offer as well as a significant range of German, British, Irish, American, Spanish and Russian brews. Average price is ¥50 for a 500mL bottle. Schindler’s Tankstelle
Schindlers Tankstelle, Beijing Schindler’s Tankstelle is a German pub and restaurant a den-style decor and windows facing the serenity of Ritan Park.
It’s probably better known as a restaurant, but its great selection of German brews makes it more valuable as a pub. Wernesgruner is on tap for ¥35 for 500mL while the light and dark varieties of Erdinger, Franziskaner, Weihenstephaner and Einsiedler wheat beer are also offered. In the food department the menu is heavy with sausages and sauerkraut starting at around ¥30, while there is a ¥60 set lunch available on weekdays. Schindler’s Tankstelle can become quite busy at night so it’s best to start your drinking session early. Overall this is a fine place to down some quality beers.
