American Restaurants in Beijing

Grandma’s Kitchen
Grandmas Kitchen, Beijing A fair bit of effort has gone into Grandma’s Kitchen to create a homely, country-style atmosphere.
The restaurant is particularly popular for late weekend breakfasts when coffee refills are free. The bacon and egg breakfasts range in price from ¥35-55, depending on how many eggs and extras (ham, bacon, sausage, etc.) you want. Also on the menu are burgers (average ¥50), pastas, pizzas and sandwiches (average ¥40). The Philly cheese steak sandwich is delicious and Grandma’s Kitchen also has some of the tastiest milkshakes in Beijing. Friendly and efficient staff speak good English. The only downside is the terrible country-pop background music.

American Steak and Eggs
American Steak And Eggs, Beijing A neighbour of Grandma’s Kitchen, American Steak and Eggs serves up a greasier variety of the same sorts of food.
The interior is downright dumpy and appears nothing like an American-style diner. Eat outside if the weather permits. All day breakfasts include a jumbo bacon and eggs option for ¥50, a variety of omelets for ¥35 and the signature steak and eggs dish for ¥65. The menu also features big sandwiches (¥30-50), pastas (around ¥50), pizzas (¥45-65, depending on size) and steaks (¥90-110). Beers range from ¥18–35. American Steak & Eggs might be lacking in atmosphere, but they do have big, greasy all-day breakfasts, and that’s the main thing.

Outback Steakhouse
Outback Steakhouse, Beijing An over-bearing attempt to give an Australian atmosphere to this restaurant has some truly cringe-worthy consequences.
Worst of all is the menu which labels the starters as “Aussie-tizers” and describes one dish an “Ab-original” treat. On the menu is a quality range of steaks, including rib-eye, porterhouse and New York cut, with a choice of size. The steaks, ranging in price from ¥108–200+ are served with a soup or salad and a stuffed potato and are good enough but nothing special. The Outback Steakhouse also has burgers for ¥60 and other meat or poultry based dishes for ¥90-120. Ultra-fawning service is a plus (unless you’re not into that sort of thing), but the very fast food service makes you question their diligence in steak preparation.

Hard Rock Cafe Beijing
Hard Rock Cafe, Beijing This place exists just in case you want to add the Beijing instalment of this worldwide chain to your list of Hard Rock Cafes visited.
There’s nothing particularly special about the Beijing Hard Rock – the memorabilia is ordinary and the design is standard. The usual food is on the menu at similar prices to elsewhere in the world, which makes it quite expensive for China. Expect to pay around ¥120-150 per person.

Tim’s Texas BBQ
Tims Texas BBQ, Beijing Something of an institution, Tim’s Texas BBQ is one of the best places in Beijing to indulge in some American-style food.
With a saloon-style interior, replete with wood paneling and posters for concerts in the American south, the decor only just avoids cheesiness. Steaks, burgers and Mexican dishes are all on the menu for an average of ¥60 per main course (cheaper options available). Beer is quite cheap with draught Tsing Tao at just ¥15. Sports broadcasts and occasional parties draw crowds, but otherwise it’s often empty.

Kro’s Nest
Kros Nest Restaurant, Beijing Kro’s Nest pizzeria is a great place to load up on good quality, familiar food.
They serve truly massive and very tasty pizzas. At 15 inches, the ‘medium’ size pizza is big enough to feed two hungry people. The menu features a variety of creative toppings as well as more traditional concoctions and is very cheap with an average price of only ¥80 for the medium size. Pizzas are also available by the slice for around ¥15-20 and there are salads and snacks on the menu as well. The Kro’s Nest also features a bar.
