Xiao Xin’s Cafe
Xiao Xins Cafe, Beijing Xiao Xin’s Cafe, named after its renowned cake-making owner, is probably the pick of the coffee shops that line Nanluogu Xiang.
What sets this place apart is that the interior feels natural – it’s charming and relaxing and filled with all sorts of interesting adornments as well as a healthy selection of books. Nice, strong coffee (¥15-28) and an assortment of tasty cakes (¥16-20) are the highlights of the menu at Xiao Xin’s Cafe. But there are also pizzas (¥45-65), sandwiches and pastas (both ¥25) and even bacon and egg breakfasts (¥25). Meanwhile, with reasonably priced spirits and cocktails (¥20-30) also on offer, Xiao Xin’s can also make for a very chilled place to drink.

Sandglass Cafe
Sandglass Cafe, Beijing Sandglass runs neck-and-neck with its neighbour Xiao Xin’s for the award of best coffee shop along Nanluogu Xiang.
While many of the coffee shops along this street, and throughout Beijing, attempt the Bohemian vibe, Sandglass is one of the few that pulls it off. And it does so not through imitation, but by drawing on Chinese elements to create a unique atmosphere. Sandglass serves very good coffee for between ¥15 and ¥25 as well as cheap beer and spirits for ¥20-25. Atmospheric lighting, interesting decorations, comfortable seating and the use of vines and plants make the cafe ooze with character. The manager’s traditional Chinese beard also adds to the vibe.

Waiting for Godot
Waiting For Godot Cafe, Beijing Waiting for Godot is a decent coffee shop that tries a little too hard to seem arty.
It does have a stylish atmosphere, with dim lighting and appropriate literary paraphernalia decorating the walls. But it seems too well orchestrated to be authentic. Likewise, the waiters seem haughty in a way that complements the overall pretence of the place. On the plus side, the coffee is very good, if overpriced at ¥35, and the Belgian beer selection is a noteworthy feature. Ample distractions including plenty of books, a CD collection and a chess set. Waiting for Godot is well worth checking out – whether you love it or find it vaguely irritating will depend on you.
