Chengdu Nightlife: Bars, Pubs and Clubs in Chengdu

The Shamrock Pub Editor Pick!
The Shamrock Pub, Chengdu The Shamrock Irish pub is one of the most popular hang-outs for Chengdu’s expat community.
It’s also your best bet in Chengdu for catching sporting events, with a focus on football and rugby. The large interior is low on pub kitsch but features ample television screens and a small beer garden. The Shamrock sells three draught beers (pints: Tiger ¥30, Heineken ¥40, Guinness ¥60) and boasts a more comprehensive range of bottled beers and a good selection of mixes (from ¥25) and cocktails (from ¥30). It’s not a bad place to grab a bite either, with the menu offering pizzas (from ¥50), burgers (from ¥25) and all-day breakfasts (from ¥20). The list of main courses ranges from pastas (from ¥25) up to some heartier steak options (¥70-120).

Dave’s Oasis Bar Editor Pick!
Daves Oasis Bar, Chengdu The small, grungy Dave’s Oasis bar is probably the most famous backpacker hangout in Chengdu.
Run by the incredibly friendly and helpful Dave, the bar attracts a mix of expats and travelers. Drinks are very cheap with bottled beer a mere ¥8. Walls are decorated with graffiti while flags and general backpacker paraphernalia litters the bar. There’s even a pool table squeezed into the bar. The only downside is that the action can end early, which means Dave’s Oasis is best as a place to start the night or to seek travel advice from the super-knowledgeable owner. Dave is a very experienced tour leader. If you need any help in Chengdu, he is also happy to give free advice by phone – just give him a call. Also check out his website to see his range of tours.

Jah Bar
Jah Bar, Chengdu Currently known as one of Chengdu’s hot-spots, Jah Bar has a cool, Tibetan-themed design.
Its cushion-strewn seating, with tables spilling out onto the sidewalk, and colorful decoration give the place a relaxed feel. The clientele it attracts – both local artistic types and travelers – also help make Jah Bar a friendly and cozy place to hang out. There is live music every Friday and anyone is free to get up and jam at other times. Food and drinks are very cheap with Tsing Tao a mere ¥10. While it’s not always crowded, it’s worth at least popping in to Jah Bar to check out what’s going on. If you get here when the place is in full swing, a good time is guaranteed.

Little Bar
Little Bar, Chengdu A mainstay of Chengdu, Little Bar is a lovely place for a drink and is considered Chengdu’s number one live music bar.
It is also a rarity in China; a western style bar where the Chinese clientele by far outnumber the foreigners, making it the best of both worlds for those looking for some form of authenticity while not wanting to stray too far from their comfort zone. Little Bar hosts regular live music: both Chinese and occasional foreign acts. What really makes Little Bar special though is the friendly staff and clientele. It’s a place where you will instantly feel welcome. Drinks are very cheap with bottled beer and spirits a mere ¥15-20. A quality, non-mainstream music selection plays when there’s no live music on.
