By Air – Flying to Chengdu

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (成都双流国际机场)
Located only 16km south-west of the city center, it’s a fairly quick and painless trip to Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport. Renovated in 2004, the airport is modern and efficient with plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes. As a hub for Air China and the home of Sichuan Airlines, Chengdu Airport serves all major domestic destinations as well as more than 20 international destinations. International routes include Air China flights to Bangkok, Tokyo and Seoul; Thai Airways flights to Bangkok; and KLM flights direct to Amsterdam. Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport’s website is particularly good, with lots of helpful information.

Transport to and from Chengdu Airport

By Bus: Bus #303 runs between the airport and the Minshan Hotel (岷山饭店) on Renmin Nan Lu, 2nd Section (just south of the city center). Look for the bus sign right outside arrivals. Buses start at 5am (from the city) and continue until the last plane has arrived. The fare is ¥10 and the journey takes about 30 minutes. The buses are a little old and there isn’t much luggage room – taxi is the better option. From the Minshan Hotel, it would cost another ¥5-10 to reach any point within the city center by taxi. Or you can get on the subway at the nearby Jinjiang Hotel stop.

By Taxi: Although the taxi rank isn’t as well organized as at other airports, there is still a queue of sorts and plenty of taxis waiting for fares. The fare on the meter will be around ¥50. While queuing, you might get approached by a couple of touts offering you a ride, but it’s best to ignore them – there’s no chance of getting them below the fare you would pay on a metered journey. Note that when traveling from the center to the airport, you should add ¥10 to the metered fare to cover the Airport Expressway toll.

Transport to Chengdu By Train

Chengdu’s main train station, also known as the North Train Station (北火车站), is located north of the city center, just outside the 2nd Ring Road at the terminus of Renmin Bei Lu. It’s about a ¥10-15 taxi fare from the city center or bus #16 will also get you to the center. You can also take the subway (North Railway Station stop). A major hub, Chengdu train station serves all the major destinations. The fast, quality, T8 train travels to Xian (13 hours) and continues on to Beijing (26 hours). Slower trains also travel to Shanghai (37 hours), Kunming (18 hours), Guangzhou (31 hours), Guilin (25 hours) and Chongqing (9-11 hours) among other destinations.

It’s unlikely your train will depart from the south train station but double-check just in case. Bus #16 also runs from the center to the south bus station. And there is also a subway station at the South Railway Station.

Almost all hotels and hostels will arrange tickets for you for a service charge of ¥35-¥100.

Transport to Chengdu By Bus

Bus travel is usually the easiest way to get around Sichuan province, and definitely the cheapest form of transport. There are several bus stations in Chengdu, the most useful of which are Wuguiqiao Station, Xinnanmen Station and Chadianzi Station.

Wuguiqiao Bus Station (五桂桥中心站) is the place to catch express buses to Chongqing (and any cities along the Chengdu-Chongqing expressway). Buses leave every half hour from 6:30am until evening and take about four hours. The station is located on Yinghui Lu, near Tazishan Park (south-east of the city center, between the 2nd and 3rd ring roads). Bus #4 from Zongfu Lu will get you there.

Xinnanmen Bus Station (新南门汽车站) is the most accessible in Chengdu and serves the major tourist destinations around Sichuan Province including a daily bus to Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve (11 hours) and buses every 20 minutes during daylight hours to Mount Emei and Leshan (2-3 hours). The station is located on the corner of Xinnan Lu and Linjiang Lu, on the south bank of the Jinjiang River.

Chadianzi Bus Station (茶店子汽车站) is a bit of an effort to get to, but it does offer a daily service to Wolong Panda Reserve (4 hours) and more departures to Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve and Songpan (8 hours), should you miss the single daily service from Xinnanmen. The station is located on the West 3rd Ring Road, Section 5. Bus #4 from Zongfu Lu will get you there.
