Great Hall of the People, Chongqing
One of China’s largest assembly halls, the Great Hall of the People in Chongqing is a lovely structure. Completed in 1954, it employs a traditional architectural style, drawing comparisons with Beijing’s Temple of Heaven. In truth it is a bit of a strange mix of traditional and Soviet, but striking nonetheless. It’s worth going inside to check out the main hall which can hold 4000 people and plays host to concerts and meetings. The Great Hall of the People is particularly impressive at night when it’s all lit up. Meanwhile, the adjacent People’s Square is a serene spot and some of the streets and alleys that snake off from the area are fun to explore.
