Beijing Lu Pedestrian Mall
Although much smaller than Shangxiajiu Lu pedestrian mall, the mall at the north end of Beijing Lu is well worth a visit. It’s lined with the usual assortment of department stores and Chinese brand-name shops. Towards the top of the street is Beijing Lu’s most interesting feature. Underneath glass, below ground level, you can see the remains of streets from three different dynasties – namely the Song (960-1279), Yuan (1279-1368) and Ming (1368-1644). The older the street remains, the deeper they lie beneath the modern-day Beijing Lu mall, which makes you contemplate just how much history is buried undiscovered under Guangzhou and, indeed, all of China.
Directions: To reach the Beijing Lu mall, walk east along Zhongshan Wu Lu from Gongyuanqian subway station for 5-10 minutes.
Show the taxi driver: 请带我去北京路步行街, 谢谢。 (Please take me to Beijing Lu. Thank you.)
