Shangxiajiu Lu Pedestrian Mall
Guangzhou’s premier pedestrian mall, this long, narrow strip of countless shops, department stores and flashing neon is the equivalent of Beijing’s Wangfujing Dajie or Shanghai’s Nanjing East Road. What sets this street apart is the beautiful architecture of the buildings that house the shops; a design that is unique to Guangzhou. Comprising of Shangjiu Lu and Xiajiu Lu, the mall stretches on an incredible distance and is surprisingly relatively free from touts. Nonetheless it’s a chaotic place and it might not be the best place to shop. But it is definitely worth visiting both during the day to take in the beauty of the buildings and again at night to bask in the neon glow.
Directions: Take Exit D from Changshou Lu subway station and head south until you reach Dishipu Lu on your left (about 7 minutes depending on the pedestrian crowds). Head east along Dishipu Lu until it becomes Xiajiu Lu.
Show the taxi driver: 请带我去上下九路步行街, 谢谢。 (Please take me to Shangxiajiu Lu. Thank you.)
