Mid-Range Hotels in Guangzhou (4-Star and 3-Star Hotels)

Guangdong Victory Hotel Editor Pick!
Guangdong Victory Hotel, Guangzhou The Guangdong Victory Hotel is the best mid-range option in Guangzhou for tourists and for business travelers who want to retreat to serene environs.
It features stylish and comfortable rooms in the idyllic surrounds of Shamian Island. The rooms aren’t exactly modern and most of them have no view, but with plush carpets and a stately feel they have a certain old-world charm to them. Rack rates starting at ¥700 for a standard room are usually discounted to about $60 and $70 respectively. Facilities at the Guangdong Victory Hotel include a swimming pool, gym and business center. The reception staff’s English skills aren’t great, but they compensate by trying to be very helpful.

Hotel Landmark Canton
Hotel Landmark Canton, Guangzhou The Hotel Landmark Canton is a decent four-star hotel that is probably most noteworthy for its views of the Pearl River.
The location is great: not far from the river bank and five minutes walk from Haizhu Square subway station. Rooms are clean, comfortable modern and pleasing to the eye. Prices are reasonable: standard rooms about $65 and business suites about $110. The restaurant, located on the 39th floor, offers some of the best views going. All rooms have free internet access while facilities are fairly standard for a hotel of this class. The Hotel Landmark Canton could be top-notch, but it falls just a little short in each area (service, facilities, room size).

Baiyun Hotel
Baiyun Hotel, Guangzhou The Baiyun Hotel is modern and comfortable without offering anything out of the ordinary.
It purports to be a five-star hotel, but isn’t really. It has a good location within the north-east commercial district. Positives include very friendly service (even if the level of English spoken isn’t great) and appealing rooms with new furnishings. They’re nothing lavish but there’s definitely nothing to complain about. Rack rates start at ¥758 for a standard room. Expect a 35-50% discount by booking online. Hotel facilities are pretty standard, perhaps a little lower than you might expect. Overall, the Baiyun Hotel is a comfortable and reasonably priced option.

Ocean Hotel
Ocean Hotel, Guangzhou The ultra-modern Ocean Hotel offers an interesting design and is a good choice for business travelers who need to be in the commercial district.
From the swank lobby, replete with grand piano, to the carpeting in the rooms which feature an ocean pattern, the hotel scores points for doing something out of the ordinary with their interior design. Reception staff smile a lot, which is nice, though they don’t appear the most competent people on the planet. Rack rates starting at ¥688 are discounted by up to 50% out of peak season. Facilities are quite standard for a four-star hotel but, again, their design is cool. Stay at the Ocean Hotel if you want a change from the usual, nondescript hotel rooms.

Guangzhou Hotel
Guangzhou Hotel The three-star Guangzhou Hotel provides a central location on Haizhu Square, adequate facilities and decent rooms for reasonable prices.
It’s certainly above average for its range. There is a rather dated feel about the place, but rooms are priced accordingly. The standard rooms are low quality and not worth the money, but the superior rooms (discounted as low as $50) are spacious, well-equipped and sport nice views. The restaurant on the 26th floor of the Guangzhou Hotel boasts spectacular views. Some staff speak superb English and are very friendly. Others simply giggle and call for help when you talk to them. Interesting fact: until the 1970s, this was the tallest building in China.

Lido Hotel
Lido Hotel, Guangzhou The Lido Hotel is an okay three-star option, but is too old-fashioned to be considered nice and the dark interior is depressing.
Standing just south of the Beijing Lu pedestrian mall, it’s a good location for shopping and restaurants, but it’s a 15 minute walk to Haizhu Square. Rack rates start at ¥398, but they generally go for 20-30% lower than that, which is pretty good value in spite of the dated furnishings and some cleanliness issues. A Chinese buffet breakfast is included in the room prices, all rooms have free internet access via a cable and some also have very nice views. Staff at the Lido Hotel are okay, so long as you don’t have to deal with them too much.

Liuhua Hotel
Liuhua Hotel, Guangzhou Although over-priced, the four-star Liuhua Hotel is probably the best option in the area around Guangzhou’s main train station.
Housed in a modern building, rooms are generally clean and comfortable, although the bathrooms could do with a bit of a touch-up. It’s only really worth considering the standard room (discounted rate around $70) – the others just aren’t worth the money. All rooms have free internet access while hotel facilities include quite a nice fitness center and sauna, business center and decent conference facilities. Staff at the Liuhua Hotel seem permanently frazzled, as if infected by the continual commotion of the train station area.
