Budget Hotels and Youth Hostels in Guangzhou

Lilac International Suites Hotel Editor Pick!
Lilac International Suites Hotel, Guangzhou Lilac International Suites is a great choice for travelers arriving or departing from the Guangzhou East train station – it’s only a few minutes walk away.
The hotel offers incredible value for money. While rack rates are ¥580 for a standard room, you will usually only pay $30. Rooms are spacious, clean and cheery and are equipped with cable television and free high-speed internet access. Although Lilac International Suites is a good distance from the center of Guangzhou, there is easy access to lines 1 and 3 of the subway. The best thing about the hotel is its cheerful, breezy design, with rooms surrounding a central garden area. Staff are pleasant and speak decent English.

Riverside Youth Hostel (Jiangpan) Editor Pick!
Riverside Youth Hostel, Guangzhou Without a doubt, Riverside Youth Hostel is the best choice for backpackers and budget travelers in Guangzhou.
Admittedly, they don’t have a lot of competition, but this place holds its ground against any youth hostel in China. Located right on the river just down from Bai-E-Tan bar street and a ferry terminal, Fangcun subway station is about 7 minutes walk away. The clean, spacious private rooms (¥160-¥190) are the best bet here. Dorm beds are ¥60. The ground floor is dominated by a large common area with a bar serving basic drinks and free wireless internet. Staff are a mixed bag – some are ultra-friendly, while others are a little more stand-offish.

Guangzhou Youth Hostel
Guangzhou Youth Hostel Guangzhou Youth Hostel is only worth considering if you’re really keen on staying on Shamian Island.
The rooms are very pokey and quite dated, while the tiny bathrooms are in the annoying ‘showerhead right over the toilet’ style. But it’s clean and the staff are competent if not particularly friendly. And the location diagonally opposite the White Swan Hotel is excellent. Doubles/twins cost ¥200 and dorm beds are ¥50. There are a few common areas of sorts, scattered around in little pockets in the corridors. But they aren’t exactly fun places to hang out. It’s impossible to book this place through the internet and there might not be any space if you just show up.

Guangzhou City Youth Hostel
Guangzhou City Youth Hostel The only reason to stay here is if you’re arriving by the main train station and you absolutely cannot be bothered going more than 200 meters before arriving at your hotel.
Located on a floor of the Baiyun City Hotel and housed in a modern building, the first hurdle is the reception desk where staff are perpetually flustered and almost no English is spoken. The next challenge will be squeezing yourself and your suitcase into one of the unbelievably tiny rooms. But it is very cheap: only ¥70/¥140 single/twin for HI members. There are five shared showers and five shared squat toilets. The rooms and amenities are quite clean. But ultimately Guangzhou City Youth Hostel is a place to sleep and nothing more.
