Restaurants in Hangzhou

Lou Wai Lou Restaurant
Lou Wai Lou Restaurant, Hangzhou This incredibly popular restaurant is probably the most famous place in town to sample local Hangzhou cuisine.
Unfortunately, this means that it’s always packed and you’ll probably have to wait for a table. Main courses are cheap at an average of ¥30-40. There’s an English version of the extensive menu available but the waiters speak no English. Located on Gushan Island at the north of West Lake, the restaurant boasts a wonderful outlook. Like most Chinese restaurants, Lou Wai Lou is busy, loud and brightly loud, but they have paid more attention to decoration than is often common. If you can put up with the wait for a table then this restaurant is a must visit.

Indian Kitchen
Indian Kitchen, Hangzhou It’s hard to recommend this restaurant – everything about Indian Kitchen seems to just miss the mark.
The meals (average ¥45 for a main course) are okay but really nothing special. The service is reasonably efficient but not particularly friendly. And the interior decoration, while interesting in principle, is just too mixed up to be appealing. On the bright side, Indian Kitchen does feature a convenient location with an outlook onto the lakeside park. Doubling as a bar, draught Carlsberg is ¥28 and there is a free pool table. There’s another Indian restaurant called Haveli just a little further north (at 77 Nanshan Lu) which might be a better bet.

Bernini Restaurant
Bernini Restaurant, Hangzhou A solid Italian restaurant, Bernini is set in a lovely, old, two-storey building and benefits chiefly from its delightful interior.
With tables set in a number of small rooms throughout the maze-like building, the restaurant offers a cozy and intimate dining experience. There’s also a balcony which is a wonderful spot in the warmer months. Meals are a hit and miss: some menu items, especially the soups and carpaccio, are truly exquisite, while some of the pastas (¥40) can be disappointing. It’s better to opt for one of the main courses (¥80). Bernini also features a decent wine list (from ¥180) and some excellent coffee. Service is attentive and waiters speak adequate English.

Cafes in Hangzhou

Vienna Coffee House
Vienna Coffee House, Hangzhou The best feature of the small, pleasant Vienna Coffee House is that is serves strong Julius Meinl coffee.
It might be pricey at ¥35-45, but it could well be the best coffee you’ll get in Hangzhou. The Vienna Coffee House also serves a range of snacks and light meals (pasta, fried rice, etc) at an average price of ¥35 and a selection of ice cream and good milkshakes. The cafe also boasts wireless internet and a tiny terrace which is a good spot for people watching in the warmer months. The location on Shuguang Lu doesn’t make it very convenient as a place to take a break from sightseeing, but it’s well worth a visit if you’re craving quality coffee.

Jamaica Cafe
Jamaica Cafe, Hangzhou Very nice coffee shop in the scenic surrounds of Xihu Tiandi, Jamaica Coffee serves solid sandwiches and drinks.
Decorated with random paraphernalia that seems to have little relevance to the name of the establishment, the cafe’s interior is nonetheless pleasant and large picture windows reveal the lakeside park and ample people-watching opportunities. Coffee starts at ¥25 while sandwiches are priced from ¥30. Neither will set your world on fire but they’re a big step up from nearby Starbucks. Jamaica Coffe is a good place for a light meal or a break at any time of day.
