Luxury Hotels in Kunming (4-Star and 5-Star Hotels)

Green Land Hotel
Green Land Hotel, Kunming The Green Land Hotel boasts nice rooms, great facilities and a location that isn’t too far from the action.
It’s a strange entity: it feels a bit like an outdated beach resort with its somewhat washed-out lobby and its cheery, laid-back receptionists clad in shorts and flower-patterned shirts. Discounted online prices can drop as low as $80 and include a buffet breakfast and free in-room internet access. The hotel also boasts some very snazzy conference and meeting facilities while recreation amenities include saunas, a gym, swimming pool and tennis court. While it has a few peculiarities, the Green Land Hotel is worth considering.

Horizon Hotel
Horizon Hotel, Kunming Opened in 1999, the Horizon Hotel was Kunming’s first five hotel and is probably still the best value one in town.
The bright, spacious and attractive lobby and the efficient, English-speaking staff create a favorable introduction to the hotel. If you opt for a standard or business room, you might be a little disappointed, but if you go for the deluxe room then the favorable impression is guaranteed to continue. Prices drop as low as ¥500 for standard and ¥660 for a deluxe room. The Horizon Hotel also boasts stately conference facilities and quality leisure facilities. The location is by the Panlong ‘River’ and quite close to the very center of Kunming.

Mid-Range Hotels in Kunming (3-Star and 4-Star Hotels)

Kunming Jinjiang Hotel
Jinjiang Hotel, Kunming The Kunming Jinjiang Hotel offers a good mix of professional service, decent rooms and a pleasant atmosphere.
The rooms are beginning to look a bit dated, but with rates discounted as low as $50 they are good value. Nicer executive rooms start at around $70. In terms of facilities, the Kunming Jinjiang Hotel’s major feature is its multiple restaurants, including a revolving western and Chinese buffet restaurant on the top floor. The location near the train station is convenient for arrivals and departures but is a bit of a distance from the center. It also means that some of the typical train station area riff-raff lurk in the surrounding streets.

Kunming New Era Hotel
Towering above the city’s main pedestrian shopping mall, the New Era Hotel has the best location of any Kunming hotel.
Location aside, the hotel is of an above average four star standard. Rooms are modern, very spacious and have free internet connection. Prices can be discounted by as much as 60% to start at around $75. Rates include two buffet breakfasts. There’s a fitness center, swimming pool and sauna, while the Chinese (Yunnan, Sichuan and Cantonese) and western (French) restaurants on the upper floors have wonderful views of Kunming. Staff at the New Era Hotel speak good English but many of them seem to wear a permanent look of irritation.

UChoice Hotel
UChoice Hotel, Kunming The UChoice Hotel is definitely the wrong choice for accommodation in Kunming.
The main problem with the hotel is the staff – they’re irritatingly reticent and downright difficult. Meanwhile, the rooms are below par compared to other four-star hotels in Kunming, although some have views of the Panlong River (ie. stream). Rack rates start at ¥688 for a standard room and ¥888 for a deluxe room, but these prices can be discounted by as much as 40%. Buffet breakfast is included in the price. The sole redeeming feature might be the location – on a quiet street by the river and fairly close to the city center. Amenities are average standard.

Budget Hotels and Youth Hostels in Kunming

The Hump Youth Hostel Editor Pick!
Hump Youth Hostel, Kunming Without a doubt the Hump Youth Hostel is the best hostel in Kunming with a fantastic location right in the city center.
Beware, though, it is a party hostel and can be very loud until late at night. Hump Hostel features a huge common room with pool table, free wireless internet, and a massive, lovely outdoor terrace. The Hump Youth Hostel’s kitchen serves cheap food and they even have draught beer. Dorm beds start at ¥25, private rooms are ¥80-¥120. The rooms with shared bathrooms (and the bathrooms themselves) are shabby, but cheap enough that it’s hard to complain. A few staff members are sullen and difficult, but others are friendly. Some are even competent.

Cloudland Youth Hostel
Cloudland Youth Hostel, Kunming Cloudland Youth Hostel is a solid offering and might suit those who are after a slightly more subdued atmosphere.
It was much lauded by Lonely Planet when it opened in 2005 and it is a pretty good hostel, though it doesn’t quite match up to the Hump Hostel. On the positive side, the rooms at Cloudland are brighter and nicer and facilities include pool and ping pong tables, free wireless internet, cafe and bar, and rooftop terrace. But the location, while not too far from the action, isn’t as good and some of the staff struggle with English. Dorm beds at Cloudland Youth Hostel start at ¥30 while private rooms with ensuite start at ¥100. The shared bathrooms can get a bit grotty.

Camellia Hotel
Camellia Hotel, Kunming The Camellia Hotel might suit those who are looking for decent private rooms but also the chance to meet other travelers.
It’s basically a two-star hotel with attached youth hostel. Although the dorm rooms are well-separated from the hotel proper (off to the side and up three flights of stairs), the facilities, including a nice sunny cafe and bar, are shared. The dorm rooms (beds: ¥30) are clean and quite nice if a little cramped. Meanwhile, standard rooms are good value at ¥220 with cable television and internet access. Though the deluxe rooms (¥390) probably aren’t worth the money. The affiliated travel agency at the Camellia Hotel has a good reputation.
