Kunming Nightlife: Bars, Pubs and Clubs in Kunming

Much of Kunming’s nightlife is clustered just north-west of Green Lake Park and near Yunnan University, centered around Wenlin Jie. Wenlin Jie is lined with a huge number of western-style restaurants, cafes and bars. Catering mainly to students, both foreign and local, the venues here are all very cheap. The place to come if you’re craving a western meal or looking for a western-style bar.

UpRock Club
Uprock Club, Kunming Built up as a world class club, Uprock has some fairly slick PR work behind it.
And so the dumpy exterior and rather basic interior (sparse walls and all night diner-style furniture) comes as a bit of a surprise. But don’t let it put you off because Uprock is a very fun club. Friendly and accommodating, this is definitely the most westernized of Kunming’s dance clubs. Uprock has regular parties and they do their best to attract overseas DJs to play. The drink list is small but prices are low with beer starting at ¥10 and cocktails from ¥15-20. Uprock can get quite busy from Thurday to Saturday while the Sunday chill-out sessions can also draw a crowd.

Chapter One
Chapter One Bar, Kunming Chapter One is probably the closest thing Kunming has to a pub, though it’s not very pub-like.
But it is a relaxed and cozy venue for a few drinks. There is no draught beer, but 500mL bottles of Dali and Tsing Tao cost just ¥8. Bottled Carlsberg and Budweiser round out the beer selection. Chapter One also offers very cheap food with breakfasts, sandwiches, pastas, pizzas and Chinese meals price from ¥10-22. The bar has free wireless internet access and a good selection of English-language books. Alternatively, a window seat on the second floor is a great spot for people watching. The music is sub-par with poppy dance dominating the soundtrack. Friendly staff and a helpful manager.

Tiger Nest
Tiger Nest Bar, Kunming Tiger Nest is an interesting little bar in the Loft art district with its best feature being the live music.
It’s usually solo guitarists playing mainly Chinese rock songs and a bit of western rock as well. However, most patrons are more interested in playing card and dice games than listening to the music. The interior of the bar is quite sparse, but has a trendy sort of feel to it. Tiger Nest is quite a good place to start a night or to go if you just want to relax with a bit of low-key live music.
