Technically, this is the center of Shanghai. Up until 1949, People’s Square and People’s Park was the site of the Shanghai racecourse. It was redeveloped into its current form in the 1950s and now serves as something of a cultural center of Shanghai with the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art, the Shanghai Grand Theater and the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall all in the area.
There are great views of the People’s Square area from the bar at the JW Marriott Hotel. You can even make out where the race track used to be. The bar itself is ordinary and serves only champagne cocktails (at ¥100 plus 15% service charge), but it’s worth it for the view.
Directions: People’s Square has its own subway station (of the same name).
Show the taxi driver: 请带我去人民广场，谢谢。 (Please take me to People’s Square. Thank you.)
