Shanghai Hotel Reviews

Mid-Range Hotels in Shanghai (3-Star Hotels)

Astor House Hotel Editor Pick!
Astor House Hotel, Shanghai There are plenty of ‘historic’ hotels in Shanghai but the Astor House, the city’s oldest hotel, retains the charm and feel of old Shanghai better than any others.
Built in 1846, past guests include Ulysses S. Grant, Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin and Zhou Enlai. It’s best to stay on a lower floor, where the corridors still feature bare, creaking wooden planks and mini-atriums. Book the deluxe twin rooms (rack rate: $190), executive rooms (rack rate: $245) or any of the suites to secure the more interesting rooms and expect a 40% discount off these rates. Due to its age, the Astor House Hotel is a little low on facilities with the charming ‘Old Bund Bar’ and the restaurants being the highlights.

Metropole Hotel
Metropole Hotel, Shanghai Built in 1934 and designed by one of the most famous architects to work in old Shanghai, Ladislaus Hudec, the Metropole Hotel is another atmospheric option.
Much of the charm has been renovated out of the interior, but it still boasts a superb location just west of the Bund. The standard rooms (rack rate: $90) are three star standard – small, dark and quite drab. But the superior rooms (rack rate: $105), while still drab, are very large with sizable picture windows looking down to the bustling intersection below. Expect 25% discounts. On the downside, it can be noisy and the facilities aren’t much. The Metropole Hotel is mainly worth considering for the location.

Magnificent International Plaza Hotel
Magnificent International Plaza Hotel, Shanghai By the simple virtue of being an acceptable, modern-style, cheap hotel the Magnificent International Plaza Hotel fills a certain niche in Shanghai.
They’ve opened themselves up to all sorts of snide remarks by naming this place the Magnificent International Hotel. And while it’s tempting to throw one in this review, it’s not such a bad place to stay. Rooms are perfectly standard; small but comfortable enough. And due to a lack of tall buildings in the area, rooms facing west have excellent, sweeping views. Expect discounts of 40% off rack rates of $130 for a standard room and $150 for a superior room. It also has a good location in an old, bustling, interesting area of Shanghai.

New Asia Hotel
New Asia Hotel, Shanghai Another of Shanghai’s ‘historic’ hotels, the New Asia Hotel is housed in an impressive 1930s building but has little else going for it.
Inside there is no old-style charm remaining. The rooms, although acceptable, look like any other slightly run-down three-star hotel rooms in the world. In fact, the whole hotel is largely drab and ordinary. And the prices are very much inflated at $72 for a standard room and $110 for a deluxe room. The location is decent – on the corner with Sichuan Lu and just north of Suzhou Creek. And, although very stoic, the staff are competent and speak good English. But, in the end, there’s just no real reason to recommend the New Asia Hotel.

Zhao’An Hotel
Zhao'An Hotel, Shanghai The Zhao’An Hotel is a good value option for those who want to stay in the train station area.
It’s possible to walk to the hotel from the Shanghai Train Station (10-15 minutes) or otherwise take the subway one stop. By three star standards, this is a well-equipped, appealing hotel, with features including an outdoor swimming pool, business center, conference rooms and free in-room internet access. Despite an ugly and depressing lobby, the rooms are quite attractive if a bit pokey. Expect discount of 40% off rack rates starting at $110 for a standard room. Staff speak surprisingly good English but appear permanently harried.
