4-Star Hotels In Shanghai

Ruijin Hotel
Ruijin Hotel, Shanghai The Ruijin Hotel is the place to stay in Shanghai if you’re seeking a hotel with character.
Rooms are housed in a number of villas dating from the 1930s and are renovated to an appropriate standard while retaining their charm. They come with little balconies from where you can take in the peaceful gardens. But character comes at a price, with rack rates starting at ¥1320 ($192) including a buffet breakfast. More of a boutique hotel, facilities might not be up to scratch for business travelers. It has its flaws, but the Ruijin Hotel is still a good choice for tourists after something a bit out of the ordinary.

Hengshan Picardie Hotel
Hengshan Picardie Hotel, Shanghai The Hengshan Picardie Hotel is a simple yet appealing option located on the western side of the French Concession.
Peaceful is the best word to describe the hotel. From its position on a lovely, tree-lined street with nearby parks to the polite, unobtrusive staff, the Hengshan Picardie is a serene hotel. Aimed especially at business travelers, the hotel has a quality business center and multiple meeting, function and conference rooms, but is light on recreational facilities. Rooms are a little on the small side but are nicely appointed and boast free in-room internet access and satellite TV. Room prices start at around $150 (discounted).

Broadway Mansions Hotel
Broadway Mansions Hotel, Shanghai Located just north of the Bund and housed in a 1934 building, the Broadway Mansions Hotel has a touch of the old and grand.
A 2007 renovation has killed any sense of antiquity that might have remained in the rooms, but an atmospheric lobby and British bar help. Hotel rooms are appealing and spacious with either a city view (facing north) or a river view (facing south). It’s best to spring for a river view room (rates around $125 for deluxe or $170 for executive). The hotel has a fairly limited range of facilities considering its supposed four star classification. The Broadway Mansions Hotel is a bit over-priced for what it offers, but has some redeeming features.

Hengsheng Peninsula International Hotel
Hengsheng Peninsula Hotel, Shanghai The HengSheng Peninsula International Hotel is a simple but modern four-star hotel at a reasonable price.
Located in a rather chaotic area: 10 minutes walk from the north end of the Bund and 15 minutes from the nearest subway (Nanjing Donglu). The hotel offers a very nice swimming pool and fitness center and some excellent restaurants. But the hotel’s real treasure is the 27th floor North Bund Midnight Bar, which offers spectacular views and must be one of the best-kept hotel bar secrets in Shanghai. Rooms are nothing extravagant but are set up nicely. Discounted rates start at $80 for a standard room and $110 for a Bund-view room. Helpful and friendly staff round off the experience.

Ya Fan Longmen Hotel
Longmen Hotel, Shanghai If you want proximity to the chaotic tangle of humanity that surrounds the Shanghai Train Station, the Longmen Hotel is the best choice.
There are some nice touches in the rooms – faux-antique clocks and furnishings that could almost be considered elegant. Discounted prices start at $90. All the expected facilities are at the hotel: Chinese and Western restaurants, conference and meeting rooms, business center, fitness center and sauna. The staff don’t speak perfect English but they try their best. The Ya Fan Longmen Hotel provides an attractively conventional accommodation option that might be won’t disappoint anyone who needs to stay in the train station area.

Sofitel Hyland Hotel
Sofitel Hyland Hotel, Shanghai The Sofitel Hyland is a fine hotel in most regards, though it is more expensive than the real five-star hotels in the Nanjing Dong Lu area.
It boats well-trained staff (quite a few are abominably and pathetically pompous though). And, oddly enough, very few, if any of them, speak French. Another negative is that the hotel charges guests to access the fitness center – very rare among Shanghai hotels. Rack rates start at ¥1955 ($285) for a superior room and ¥3100 ($452) for a club room. Even with 35-40% discounts common, it’s still quite an inflated price. The rooms themselves are a little small but are very plush and offer some lovely views of central Shanghai.
