Luxury Hotels in Shanghai (5-Star Hotels)

JinJiang Hotel Editor Pick!
JinJiang Hotel, Shanghai The JinJiang Hotel is the place to stay in Shanghai if you’re looking for both luxury and old-world atmosphere.
With a great location in the heart of the French Concession, the hotel offers all the comforts of a five star establishment with far more character than most hotels. Rooms are spread across three buildings nestled among well-kept gardens. Rack rates are high, but rooms can be discounted as low as $105 – an absolute steal. The only downside is that many of the rooms lack good views. Facilities are superb with a fine fitness center and swimming pool and some great restaurants. The Jinjiang Hotel staff are also excellent – efficient and polite while not obsequious.

Ramada Plaza Hotel Editor Pick!
Ramada Plaza Hotel, Shanghai The pick of Shanghai’s high-end hotels, the Ramada Plaza offers lovely rooms, a great location and efficient, friendly service.
The design is great, with separate atriums for the standard room and executive room floors, stylish restaurants and rooms that feel atmospheric and inviting rather than cold and soulless. Rack rates start at $180 for a superior room, but expect discounts of30%. The location at the People’s Square end of Nanjing Rd East is very convenient for navigating Shanghai. In terms of facilities, the Ramada Plaza Hotel boasts an excellent fitness center, a range of meeting and conference rooms and five high-quality restaurants.

Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel, Shanghai
Featuring top-rate facilities and impeccable service, the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel is a solid option for business travelers.
A good location set a little back from Nanjing East Road means you can largely avoid the sea of touts as you exit the hotel. And even the cheapest rooms (priced from $120) offer great views of the glitzy thoroughfare. The Howard Johnson doesn’t boast the biggest rooms of Shanghai’s 5-star hotels, but they’re comfortable and appealing and they boast free internet connection. Hotel facilities include immaculate conference and function amenities, a fitness center (including an indoor swimming pool with skylight) two restaurants and a lobby bar with live music each night.

JC Mandarin Hotel
While still an impressive hotel in a great location, the JC Mandarin Hotel struggles to compete with Shanghai’s newer five star hotels.
The lobby area is grand and the staff are well-trained and friendly. The problem is that the rooms are looking tired and displaying signs of age. Rates vary by season, but at the cheapest you can get a standard room for $150, which isn’t really worth the money. On the bright side, Nanjing Xi Lu is a nice up-market, shopping street. Rooms are well-equipped and the hotel facilities are also of high quality. The JC Mandarin isn’t at all a bad hotel, it simply doesn’t offer anything to stand out from the competition and is a bit behind the 8-ball in all that it does offer.

Oriental Riverside Hotel
Oriental Riverside Hotel, Shanghai The Oriental Riverside Hotel is an excellent option for anyone who needs to stay in the Pudong area.
Housed in one side of the Convention Center, the rooms have wonderful views of either the Bund or the Pudong skyline. Rooms are exceptionally large, though perhaps a little worn, and discounted prices can drop to as little as $120. Facilities include a fitness center and swimming pool with river views, three restaurants and two bars. There isn’t too much to complain about with the Oriental Riverside Hotel, except that Pudong is not the most exciting area. But the hotel is less than 10 minutes walk from Lujiazui subway.

The Westin Bund Center Hotel
Westin Bund Center Hotel, Shanghai One of the nicest, and most expensive, hotels in Shanghai, the Westin Bund Center offers a stunning design, spacious rooms and excellent service.
The lobby area ground floor bar and cafe are very grand, benefiting from a sleek atrium design. Meanwhile, having the reception staff dressed in (sort of) traditional clothes is a nice touch. The name is a little misleading: the Westin is actually a few blocks back from the Bund on Henan Zhong Lu, which is a hectic and not particularly appealing street. But the location is still a convenient one. Standard rooms start at $170 and have all the bells and whistles you could hope for. Likewise, facilities at the Westin Bund Center Hotel are first-rate.
