Bars in Shanghai

Zapatas Bar, Shanghai Zapata’s is a fun, down-to-earth bar where a non-pretentious crowd dances to Top 40 style hits of the past and present.
Split over two floors, the main action takes place downstairs where patrons writhe on a long, narrow and crowded dance floor and the long bar-top. Upstairs is a more chilled-out space playing less mainstream tunes, which serves as a great sanctuary when the ground floor antics begin to overwhelm. As does the small beer garden, where makeshift bars allow you to buy drinks without battling the crowds inside. Prices are average for Shanghai with draught beer at ¥40 and cocktails from ¥50. Zapata’s also offers Mexican food until 10:30pm with a main course costing an average of ¥90.

Mural Bar, Shanghai Housed in a basement and boasting an interesting cave-style interior, Mural has a really great design.
Unfortunately the young, impoverished foreign student clientele are generally very filthy people. Drinks are incredibly cheap (there’s some sort of drink special on every night). The ¥100 ($14.50) open bar on Friday nights might sound appealing, but it’s best to stay away unless you’re keen to see hideously ugly foreign students throwing up and people pissing on the bathroom floor. The Latin Jazz Night on Thursdays and the live music on Saturday nights draw a classier crowd. Mural can be a very fun place if you’re in the right mood for it. Otherwise it might just leave you vaguely disgusted.

Malone’s American Bar
Malones American Bar, Shanghai Malone’s American Bar is a three-storey behemoth that is always packed with patrons and usually pretty good fun.
Malone’s is also a great place to meet new people if you’re new in Shanghai. The ground floor is for drinking, eating, watching sports on multiple large screens and hosting the house cover band. The second floor holds a free pool table and more places to park yourself while downing a pint. The third storey loft is for less rowdy (and more talented) live music artists. Prices are pretty much standard: draught Tiger costs ¥40, cocktails and spirits ¥50. Malone’s also boasts an extensive menu, with a huge range of burgers, other standard bar food and Chinese options as well (from ¥60).

Time Passage
Time Passage, Shanghai Time Passage is a fair way outside Shanghai’s main nightlife area, but this quaint bar is worth seeking out.
Time Passage basically offers the Western style pub atmosphere, but unlike the city’s Irish or English-style pubs, it has a touch of the Oriental to it. The mish-mash of decorations have a Tibetan flavor and you will actually find as many Chinese people here as foreigners (maybe even more!). There’s live music here four nights a week with a Chinese band pumping out classic rock covers. Drinks are cheap with draught Tiger at ¥25, and the staff and patrons are friendly. A good place to start a night or have a few drinks with friends.

Windows Scoreboard
Windows Scoreboard, Shanghai Sure, Windows Scoreboard is a bit of a dive, but it’s fun and it’s cheap: a pretty rare combination in Shanghai.
With broadcasts of big sporting events, free pool tables, ample seating, a friendly crowd and a rock music soundtrack, the bar has a few solid drawcards. Not to mention that beer starts at a mere ¥10. There are also some cheap and filling (if rather ordinary) bar snacks from ¥10. A good place to to try for a budget night out.

Captain Bar
Captain Bar, Shanghai Perched on top of Captain’s Hostel is this lovely bar with a wonderful view of the Huangpu River and Pudong skyline.
Unlike most bars with such a view, Captain’s Bar is set a couple of buildings back from the Bund, which allows you to take in the surrounding colonial era buildings as well as the famous skyline of modern Shanghai. There’s an excellent balcony area which offers unblemished views. Drinks are average prices for Shanghai – ¥40 for draught Tiger – which is surprising given that the bar is attached to a youth hostel. Captain Bar is definitely worth a visit – it might well be the only laid-back place in Shanghai that has a view like this.

Blue Frog
Blue Frog Bar, Shanghai A successful Shanghai bar chain, Blue Frogs dot the city serving as a place for patrons to drink away the stress of their work day.
They are classical style bars, designed in a simple but classy way. Drink prices are about average: draught Tiger is ¥35, Heineken ¥40, spirits and cocktails start at ¥50. While there are no real surprises in terms of the food on the menu, the meals are of very good quality for a bar – the blue cheese hamburger is especially noteworthy. Much is made of the Blue Frog’s wall of fame: anyone who drinks their way through all 100 shooters on the menu gets their name on there in perpetuity. A noble achievement, indeed, and an incredibly satisfying reward. Six other locations in Shanghai: see the website for contact details.
