This 3.6km canal-lined street stretches all the way from Chang Gate (west City Wall) to Tiger Hill. It was constructed in 825AD (Tang Dynasty), under the supervision of poet and Governor of Suzhou, Bai Juyi. These days the street (particularly the area closest to the City Walls) is lined with interesting souvenir shops, food stalls, small restaurants, and even a few Western restaurants and bars are starting to pop up. You can also take a boat on a cruise along the canal. This is a delightful street to wander by day or night.
Directions: Shantang Jie starts just across the moat from Chang Gate (Changmen) at the west city wall.
