The Great Mosque
One of the highlights of Xian, this is probably the most interesting mosque you will find anywhere in China. Chinese mosques are very different from their Middle Eastern counterparts, heavily drawing on Chinese design elements. Holding peaceful gardens, ancient steles (stone tablets), statues and ornate buildings, the Great Mosque is a delightful place to wander through. The 4000 square meter Main Prayer Hall can hold 1000 people. Originally built in the Tang Dynasty, apparently in 742, the mosque has been renovated and reconstructed numerous times since then so that most of the buildings are in Ming or Qing style.
Admission: ¥25. Open: 8:00-18:00.
